Chaston’s Quarantined 13th Birthday of Nothingness
Vibrant led balloons arches and silver steamer still hang across the window. Rainbows of color on the numbers 1 and 3 are still a float. They are a reminder that “Everyday is my birthday”. Which was Chaston’s reply to my question “Boy, why do you still have those decorations up!”
On December 23 we celebrated Chaston’s life with a day of surprises and fulfilled birthday requests. This year’s request was a “Day of Nothingness”. Followed by the question, “Can we go to K-1 Speed?” In which I replied, “Whatever you want son! It’s your day”.
Before the dawn of day, I went to work decorating his room; halfway finishing only moments before he woke up. He arose to an expectant surprise. I always decorate his room on his birthday. Which is typically followed by some sort of birthday hunt for his gift. But Grandma hadn’t arrived with it yet! But when she did, he was definitely surprised!
Silver platters of bacon doughnuts, more bacon, grapes and orange juice was served for breakfast. Upon his cousins arrival, Pepperoni pizza and Slushy Delights were survived at lunch. Moments after serving their beverages I said to myself, “Their drinks are super girly! If his dad was here, he would be so mad. Never do that gain.” They didn’t care. They were just happy to have pizza! After hours of gaming in a super lit room, we headed to K-1 Speed for racing. These under aged drivers soared around the track at unknown speeds. While I desperately tried to not crash. It was awesome!
Wishes made over candle lit pizookies and an unharmonized happy birthday song brought our night to a conclusion. Just like last year when Dad was here. What was supposed to be a Happy Day of Nothingness was really full of all the joy and excitement. This 13 year old deserved it. I don’t blame him for keeping his birthday decor up. Chaston’s life is worth celebrating everyday. But that’s for another blog.
